We Robot

Watching the film Memento, reminded of that condition I had already known from the days when I studied Psychology in highschool and college. The loss of short term memory is not the cause, short term memory functions fine, it's the ability of the brain to process and store to long term memory that is destroyed. This renders the person in a constant state that one can not imagine.
What we sadly see is how robotic we truly are, just functioning machines. We are not magical spirits andlife is not pure thought, apparently. That lack of control and reliance on our bodies is revealing. If one is to believe there is a soul or something more to consciouness then we can only think of people in this condition as being in a coma.
What is interesting is that if you take away parts of the body you see we are only as good as our whole. Take off limbs, world is restricted but the mind is fine, however, leave just a head alive and a person may go mad from lack of being able to move to seek out new stimulus.
We have basic drives and these needs, the search for the satisfaction of urges, is actually what we call life.

Food-The main mover of anything a live. In order to function, one must consume to get engergy. Whether it is a plant growing to get more light, an elephant marching to find leaves, or a hip hop loving teenage violent ignorant thug of a person chomping on some fried chicken. We move to get energy to move more, its a viscious cycle.
Water-Same as food, just a different physical form. We need air to breath, food to eat, liquid to drink, we need the three states of matter. Interesting how much of life comes in three's. Three dimensions, three states of matter....
Shelter-Shelter for larger animals is a house, cave, somewhere safe. For microbes its finding the right conditions. Again, another reason we have to move. In the case of most violent criminals, the govt provides them with food and shelter. When they have met this, they now how the energy to not only produce more offspring, but run around and do as they like, no matter how illogical, because they can. To stop crime, cut these ones off immediately.
Mates-Sex. The drive to go out and fuck something or to basically sneeze into a hole in another persons body. In a way sperm are viruses...
Bonds-Bonds, no not fixed income, I am talking friends, family, that guy who nods when he hands you a free newspaper every evening after work. People need people, a person a lone is madness, its like if a tree falls in the forest does anyone hear it. For other animals its safety in numbers or the ability to have other needs met by living in group, like an ant colony.
Stimulus-Everything above you know about and it is obvious to the thinking person. Remember not all people think much, so this is obvious to a very small percent of the actual population of human beings. Anyways, Stimulus. Stimulus is the fact that our brains need shit going on, if your head was placed in a white room with no sound, you would be alive, but you would go crazy. In other words to be consciously aware, awake, systems switched on to receive things, and you receive nothing, you might as well be dead. Even without language then, where a mind can talk to itself, you would be dead, in other words, all white, all black, nothingness is death. We need stuff, we do not like being bed ridden, we do not like sleeping weeks straight, we get bored doing the same thing, etc.

The Senses:
Feeling- Feeling is very much tied to the needs for mating and bonds. You want to touch people, hug friends, kiss lovers, as well as determining what is going on in your enviornement. Is it too cold, too hot, pain, pleause, etc. Without all of the other senses, if you have feeling of something, you know you are alive. Again if just a human head is around with numbness, if you lack any other senses, you are basically dead.
Sight- Sight is one of those bonus senses. You could live without site, like my man Stevie. However, sight is that sense that is an essense of life, and we would expect no less in the afterlife.
Hearing-This is my favorite sense because music is wonderful. Sound is wonderful.
Taste and Smell-These are also bonus senses, but more important for other species, one could imagine smelling in color, but I do not have access to LSD here.

And where am I going with all of the basics. To show that we are not just one thing, we are two, three, binary, yin yang, equal opposite. To exist is to be many things, and these things are finely tuned to exist here. The real puzzle is how does such wonder, happiness, and complexity, create our consciouness yet at the same time such ignorance and disorder reigns supreme. One can only think that without good there can be no evil, but why is there so much ignorance and evil?
We will never know, but I still think things are ok, though there is always that fear and that knowledge that not everything is ok. Again though no matter how bad it gets, death, the ultimate release is around, so maybe things are ok.

So the man with no ability to create new memories, is not functioning because he misses some critical parts. It is sad, but thanks to death, he will be released and maybe reunited to a place where everything is stored and made whole...
